Lessons
From the President:
For our interested energy experts, things are progressing on the solar panels front.
There are 54 panels on the roof, at a cost of roughly $25000 ex GST. We expect to save at least one-third of our electricity costs through this, and thereby recover the cost of the capital expenditure in about four years. Following a government inspection on 19 March, the system will be in full operation. We can all then bask in any sunlight.
Thank you to Claire Hughes, Kerry Butcher and Emily Inglis for their work on this project.
Please read below for appeals for help…
Best wishes,
Pam

Dear Hilda Lirsch,
How did you and your partner win the final of the Griffith Pairs with a score of 67%, 7% ahead of second place?
Best wishes,
Narcissus
§§§§§§§§§§§§§§
Dear Narcissus,
The answer lies in the classic Beatles song “With a Little Help from my Friends”.
For example:
Sitting East-West, partner and I were conducting an artificial game-forcing auction.
Pard (East) bid an artificial 2♣.
South held:
♠AT9
♥875
♦T92
♣KJT9
so decided to try a lead-directing double.
Alas, North thought the double was a takeout double, so holding:
♠Q74
♥J93
♦K54
♣8762
North chose to bid 2♠, their better major.
But pard held:
♠KJ832
♥AKQ4
♦QJ8
♣8
so he had an easy penalty double of 2♠ for a top to us.
The moral of this story is to discuss in advance with partner when a double is lead-directing or alternatively when a double is takeout.
Best wishes,
Hilda
