From the President:
Some of our members have started travelling with the opening of the Queensland border. We wish them well and hope that those of you still in Canberra will enjoy bridge in the club or online as suits you best.
Best wishes,
Pam
Returning to Bridge in the Club Rooms
The ACT Government requires businesses to have a comprehensive COVID-19 Safety Plan in order to recommence activities.
The Committee has written CBC’s Safety Plan in order to ensure face-to-face bridge sessions are as safe as possible for everyone.
That said, it is not possible to play bridge in the clubrooms in a way that completely removes all COVID-19 risks. The Committee understands that some members will not want to play face-to-face bridge at this time given their personal situation and health issues. We urge all members to consider their own circumstances and decide what is best for them.
- COVID-19 Safety Plan, as of 7 July 2020
- Playing at the Club Checklist for Members, as of 7 July 2020
Next week at the Clubrooms
For the week commencing Monday 20 July we have three sessions scheduled at the clubrooms
- Tuesday afternoon 1:15pm Sally Barber
- Wednesday morning 10.00am Ian Robinson
- Friday afternoon 1.15pm Bruce Crossman
Occasional notes
We have abandoned the need for pre-registration to play at the club and returned to our normal procedure of walk in duplicate.
Please remember not to arrive at the clubrooms until 20 minutes before the start of play, have your voucher (or cash) in your hand as you enter the building and PLEASE do not huddle together in a scrum formation at the bottom of the steps waiting for the clubrooms to open.
Also – enjoy the experience – most other bridge players in Australia are unable to attend their local bridge clubs.
Please note that all bathroom lights are on a sensor timer – so please don’t turn any lights off.
Next week on BBO - a change to the start time of the Thursday BBO sessions
For the week commencing Monday 20 July, we have scheduled 6 tourneys on BBO.
Please note that the times for the Thursday sessions to be directed by Jodi have changed from this week onwards, with the imps event starting BEFORE the matchpoint tourney.
| Tournament Session | Director |
| Monday morning 10:00am | Bruce Crossman |
| Tuesday evening 7:15pm (imps) | Stephen Fisher |
| Wednesday morning Novice 10:15am | Barb Toohey |
| Wednesday evening 7:15pm | Christy Geromboux |
| Thursday morning 9:55am (imps) | Jodi Tutty |
| Thursday morning 10:00am (matchpoint) | Jodi Tutty |
Occasional notes
- Members pay US$2 or $3 to play on BBO and about 65% of that fee is returned to the club by the ABF. For the month of June, the club received over $2500 – not enough to keep the club liquid in the longer term, but at least a contribution in these Covid times.
- Please remember to say hullo to your opponents at the start of each round. If there is a problem at the table, simply call the director (click on the hamburger).
- Remember that the club’s policy is to allow undos when requested, but members can only ask for an undo because of a misclick, not a change of mind.
More information is available on our BBO pages:
ABF Sunday Events 2:30pm AEST

Beyond Blue - Club Chairty for 2020/2021
Beyond Blue is Canberra Bridge Club's charity for July 2020 until June 2021. They "provide information and support to help everyone in Australia achieve their best possible mental health, whatever their age and wherever they live".
Donations to Beyond Blue can be made either by cash donation in-Club (currently only non-receiptable small change donations, due to limiting cash handling), by direct deposit to the CBC bank account (please label clearly and email us to let us know so we can organise a Tax Receipt for you) or through our CBC online fundraising page with Beyond Blue. If you donate online through the online fundraising page you will automatically receive an electronic Tax Receipt for your donation. This money goes directly to Beyond Blue, but is still recorded on the CBC fundraising tally.
Since 2000, Beyond Blue has been working to reduce the impact of anxiety, depression and suicide by:
- supporting people to protect their mental health and to recover when they are unwell,
- reduce people’s experience of stigma and discrimination, and
- to improve people’s opportunities to get effective support and services at the right time.
Please support our chosen charity and give generously.

(from Disorder in the American Courts)
ATTORNEY: Doctor, before you performed the autopsy, did you check for a pulse?
WITNESS: No.
ATTORNEY: Did you check for blood pressure?
WITNESS: No.
ATTORNEY: Did you check for breathing?
WITNESS: No..
ATTORNEY: So, then it is possible that the patient was alive when you began the autopsy?
WITNESS: No.
ATTORNEY: How can you be so sure, Doctor?
WITNESS: Because his brain was sitting on my desk in a jar.
ATTORNEY: I see, but could the patient have still been alive, nevertheless?
WITNESS: Yes, it is possible that he could have been alive and practicing law
--- ---
ATTORNEY: How was your first marriage terminated?
WITNESS: By death.
ATTORNEY: And by whose death was it terminated?
WITNESS: Take a guess.

Note: Please do not try this at the Club! ;-)
